John P. Mattia, one of
America
’s best-known rosarians, is gaining fame as the nation’s premier digital
photo-artist of roses. A horticulturist and award-winning exhibitor for decades,
he recently combined his longtime passion for roses with a 40-year talent in the
photographer’s studio. The digital age has only added new, fresh dimensions to
his photographic work, and as a result John has produced fascinating forms and
representations of roses interwoven with other visual elements to tell a story
far beyond the scope of a pretty rose photo. The
messages in his digital-rose-art run the gamut, from the basics in the
definition of the rose in its setting, to the symbolic, archetypal
nature of birth, renewal, and the infinite qualities of existence. The wonders
of the world are filtered through rosy sunsets, the calamity of nature is seen
through angry seas and tornadoes, and the mysteries of the hereafter are
glimpsed momentarily through a surrealistic vision of creation.
